The Truth About This Special Time In Your Life

According to what we remember from pamphlets geared towards 6th-grade girls, puberty is regarded as one of the most awkward and scary stages in a person’s life. It’s a time of horrifying physical transformations, scary new feelings, and growing interest in activities that you are still not old enough to engage in legally. Common symptoms of puberty include: braces, frizzy hair, baby fat, having a crush on 8th grader Steve Julius, blinding body odor and lame extracurricular interests like the violin or Bedazzling.

EXTRACURRICULARS: Feeling Judged by your E-mail Inbox is Worse than Puberty

Most mornings, I wake up and have to clear out a lot of junk mail - advertisements from companies I bought from once, over a year ago, and alerts about certain types of news I have set up but which I'm usually too lazy to read through, etc etc.

Occasionally, though, I see one of the most toxic junk mails of all. The ones from life-and-career-destinations-I don't-have.

Hey e-mail inbox, can you lay off the judginess for, like, a day?

I've gone through phases where I've thought "hey, what about grad school?" or "I think I could get a different job and still manage my life" or "I should volunteer," but these were clearly just blips intended to boost my self-esteem momentarily, not things I planned on following through on.

Shouldn't my e-mail box know that?

I think probably it does, and continues forcing these things under my nose to remind me how pathetic I'm being. And yet it consistently labels my credit card bill, one which I really do want to pay on time, because I'm lame enough to care about my credit rating, as "POSSIBLE SPAM."
